Where Do I See Math?
Standards:
Essential Questions:
Description and Product:
Math is everywhere! In this project, students will uncover mathematics that exists in the world around them.
This project was inspired by Dan Meyer's Three Act Stories. Dan Meyer suggests posing different situations to help students see and make sense of math in the real world. The different situations are usually presented in the form of an image or a video. Act 1 involves showing the image or video and asking students to write down all questions that come to mind. In Act 2, students choose which mathematical question they would like to explore about the image or video. They then work through answering the question in Act 3.
After working through two of Dan Meyer's Three Act Stories, students will create their own. In other words, they will create an image or video of a situation in which they see mathematics. They will then lead their class through completing their Three Act Story.
Students' Creations:
- Model with mathematics.
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Essential Questions:
- Where do we see math?
- How can we use math to make sense of the world around us?
