Design Challenge
Essential Questions:
Description:
In this project, students will take on the role of an architect/designer in a very competitive Design Challenge. The challenge is to redesign the 9th Grade Commons at HTHNC to make it the best common space it can be! Students will determine the best use of the space, and then create a detailed floor plan of the space, using the following geometric concepts:
Products
- How are spatial relationships, including shape and dimension, used to draw, construct, model, and represent real situations or solve problems?
- In what ways are the mathematical attributes of objects or processes measured, calculated and/or interpreted?

In this project, students will take on the role of an architect/designer in a very competitive Design Challenge. The challenge is to redesign the 9th Grade Commons at HTHNC to make it the best common space it can be! Students will determine the best use of the space, and then create a detailed floor plan of the space, using the following geometric concepts:
- Measured angles
- Complementary, Supplementary and Vertical angle
- Types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene, right, acute and obtuse
- Angles formed by parallel lines cut by transversals (corresponding, alternate interior angles, same-side interior angles)
- Different shaped polygons
- Rigid transformations (reflections, rotations, translations)

- Blueprint: Students create a scale drawing/concept blueprint of their proposed design. They use geometric tools and graph paper to create a scale drawing of the interior layout of the space. A rough draft and a final draft will be completed. Professional architects and designers will critique all rough drafts to assist in the revision process.
- Written Explanation: Students will demonstrate their written communication skills by describing their design for the 9th grade Commons in detail.
- Design Pitch (Oral Presentation): Students will have between 45 and 90 seconds to present their design proposal to the panel of judges.
